Our words, actions, body language and the nuances of our facial expressions are the messengers we send out to the world. We are constantly communicating and receiving feedback, both overtly and subliminally, influencing others and shaping our interpersonal experience, whether we are aware of it or not.

“The Social Engagement Imperative, Leadership Embodied” explores the source of recursive, unconscious behavior, including negative personality traits that emerge from our earliest developmental years. All manner of self-interest has separated us from the spirit of common interest that has driven group behavior in mammals for the past 235 million years.

Since we are no longer chased by saber-toothed tigers through the jungle, the stressors and dangers we face are most often interpersonal. Therefore, the need to be together in the close-knit bonding that makes us feel safe within a cooperative group is in our most primal DNA. To be socially engaged is the embodiment of human connection and the portal that leads to honesty, trust, tolerance, kindness, generosity, compassion, and empathy, all of which define true leadership.

Lloyd Pilling Tosoff is a former chief executive and organizational leader whose personal experience and research into the brain’s procedural learning and social engagement systems have brought about a radical perspective on leadership development in this book that explores the true nature of change.
